June 13th, 2016 – XXL released their highly anticipated 9th annual “Freshman Issue”, which showcases 2016’s hottest upcoming rappers. Featuring Lil Yatchy, Desiigner, Dave East, Denzel Curry, G Herbo, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Dicky, Anderson.Paak, 21 Savage, and Kodak Black, the magazine covers their rise to fame and the obstacles getting there. Vanessa Satten, chief editor of XXL revealed that the 10 rappers did all of their photo shoots, videos, interviews, solo’s, and other material in just one day!

Following up with 2015’s Freshman class, an interview with Mike Tyson on hip-hop, and a look into the U.K’s grime scene, this issue is packed with stories and unforgettable details any rap fan wouldn’t want to miss.

The issue officially hits stands June 28th, the same day as their XXL Freshman Show in New York (with an LA concert happening on July 25th); along with this, XXL will also be releasing new interviews, cyphers, and other bonus content to help fans better connect with their favorite rappers.
With past Freshman line up’s including Big Sean, Vince Staples, Meek Mill, Future, and Tyler the Creator, there’s no doubt that XXL and the 2016 Freshman’s fans want them to reach the same level of success.

Fans online have had very mixed opinions over this year’s pick of rappers; some fans were disappointed that their favourite rappers weren’t picked, while others wanted to see a female rapper or trashed the line up all together, with @iThurnis (on Twitter) saying, “Old head/real hip hop Twitter is about to have a stroke over this XXL Freshman List.”
Do you think XXL missed anyone in this year’s Freshman issue? Let us know.
