Toronto rapper Tory Lanez hit the pre-show stage at Sunday’s BET Awards and people immediately took to Twitter, bashing him. The audience seemed to love his performance of “Say It”, but many online criticized him.
Some simply don’t like him because of the recent controversy he’s stirred up with fellow Toronto rapper Drake. In his latest song “For Real”, Lanez basically said that he’s repping Toronto now and that Drake isn’t as talented. Later in an interview, Drake responded to this, saying that he supports the hustle and encourages rising to the top, but not while dragging him down (especially since the two have never met).
Most of the comments, though, were directed at his singing and his hair. Many people thought he sounded terrible, saying that he sounds sick or that he’s simply just trash. Others were mocking him about his apparent bald spot on top of his head.
He was up for Best New Artist but lost to Bryson Tiller. He has yet to respond to the backlash of his performance.
