Last Monday, the CFDA awards took place in New York with only the biggest names and icons in fashion being invited. This annual event recognizes the incredible designer and contributors to American fashion from all different sectors of this amazing industry including, design, journalism, and creative vision. These awards are considered a huge lifetime achievement and provide tremendous opportunities to the nominees, honorees, and winners. Hosted by Zanna Roberts Rassi, an award winning journalist, stylist, and Marie Claire senior fashion editor , definitely kept a warm family vibe going on the red carpet I’m sure – as she knows everyone.
“The nominations are submitted by The CFDA Fashion Awards Guild, an invitation only network comprised of top fashion retailers, journalists, stylists, influencers and the 450+ member designers of the CFDA. The nominees, as well as recipients of the honorary awards are ratified by the CFDA Board of Directors.” (cfda.com)
So for all of those who haven’t read up on the CFDA Fashion Awards , I’m giving you all the details followed by my opinion, obviously. Feel free to comment, agree, argue, even start a banter below 🙂
Womenswear Designer of the Year: Marc Jacobs
This years womenswear designer of the year winner was actually of quite a surprise to me. I mean yes, it’s Marc Jacobs, but common this year’s collections were not as enlightened as Provenza’s Schouler’s. *sigh* oh, Proenza. Everything about Jack McCullough and Lazaro Hernandez made a huge splash in trends this year. From patchwork suede coat to the shoulder cut-out detail which has become the trend of the summer, PS has left my mouth agape. Yes-agape!
Menswear Designer of the Year : Thom Browne
SO. MUCH. YES.
Swarovski Award for Womenswear: Brandon Maxwell
Personally after seeing the Monse dress on Selena Gomez , I was hooked a) on Monse and b) on Selena Gomez. To all my friends who know how I feel about Selena, they understand that this was life altering to say the least. However, congrats to Brandon Maxwell because these designs are still stunning.
The Swarovski Award for Menswear : Alex, Matthew and Samantha Orley of Orley
Yes, I am a very big fan of the preppy British hipster boyish look of Orley , but there is something about a more streetwear menswear that is so perfect. All praise John Elliot.
Accessory Designer of Year : Rachel Mansur and Floriana Gavriel of Mansur Gavriel
Swarovski Award for Accessory Design: Paul Andrew
I am so totally for shoes winning this award, but Gigi Burris’s hair accessories were beyond beautiful. There’s something about a beautiful head piece that brings out the princess in me, and anything that can make me feel like a princess is a winner in my books. Anyone else?
The honourees were as follows:
The Media Award In honor of Eugenia Sheppard: Canadian-British Imran Amed
The International Award: Alessandro Michele (Gucci)
Lifetime Achievement Award: Norma Kamali
Founder’s Award in Honor of Eleanor Lambert : Donna Karan
The Board of Director’s Special Tribute: David Bowie (RIP)
Oh, did I mentioned Beyonce was there? She won the Fashion Icon Award. All hail Queen Bey.
